Chapter 2: The Frontier
Having successfully taken Emi and Ange as my apprentices, I immediately returned to the frontier on Mr. Lesser Dragon.
There’s nothing for me to do in the royal capital; staying there only provokes those who dislike me, and nothing good comes of it. In that case, I’d rather return to the frontier and start training these girls as soon as possible.
“We’ll be arriving soon. Are you all okay? Torte, Emi, Ange.”
“…I just want to get back on solid ground.”
In response to my question, Emi replied in a voice that sounded like a groan from the depths of the earth. She looked visibly pale, holding her hand over her mouth.
“Sensei! Emi is about to lose her imperial dignity!”
“Didn’t she lose that long ago?”
“Ange, shut up! Don’t be so serious! Ugh…!”
We took several short breaks along the way, but I guess it wasn’t enough.
When I tried to show her the ground, thinking it was a good view, she seriously told me to stop with a look of genuine dislike. It seems she’s really bad with heights. Emi is more sensitive than I thought.
“If you’re not good with heights, would you like to lie down?”
“It’s not just the height; it’s not the only reason. Because we’re near the dungeon here, the presence of the ‘World’s Distortion’ is thick, so I can’t calm down. Ever since I came to the Holy Kingdom, I’ve been far from dungeons, so I’m feeling a bit agitated—or maybe it’s reminding me of the past…”
“…Is that how it is?”
“Torte, in the Demon Kingdom, dungeons are more common than in the Holy Kingdom. So the people there are familiar with dungeons, and it’s said that’s why they grow strong.”
After all, it’s normal for monsters to exist nearby. In the Holy Kingdom, dungeons are strictly managed, so the presence of monsters feels more distant.
“This is a good opportunity, so let’s have a quick lesson. Torte, what is a dungeon?”
“Eh!? Um, a dungeon is an alternate space that occurs when ‘World’s Distortion’ accumulates!”
“Correct. Then, what is the ‘World’s Distortion’ that causes dungeons to appear?”
“The ‘World’s Distortion’ is the residual thoughts of the Evil God who schemed to destroy this world… Right?”
“Yes, that’s correct.”
Perhaps unsure of her answer, Torte looked toward Ange for confirmation.
When Ange nodded affirmatively, Torte let out a sigh of relief.
“To be more specific, the ‘World’s Distortion’ is the residual thoughts of the Evil God and a type of magical power. Magic is the blessing bestowed upon people after the gods shattered. Therefore, it proves that the Evil God was also one of the deities.”
“Good addition, Ange. Therefore, the ‘World’s Distortion’ tries to alter this world blessed by the Goddess. It manifests in the form of dungeons. By the way, it’s said that dungeons are closely related to demons.”
“Closely related?”
“There are two reasons. First, in the Demon Kingdom, dungeons are more familiar than in the Holy Kingdom. The status of Saintesses is low in the Demon Kingdom, and they don’t rely on Saintesses’ purification for the threat of monsters. Instead, they thin out monsters by using dungeons as places for trials or tests of strength.”
“Is that why the culture of respecting the strong developed among demons?”
“Yes, that’s one of the reasons. The other reason is that demons are a race that has adapted to the ‘World’s Distortion.’ That’s why there are so many diverse races among demons compared to humans.”
“Um… Does that mean demons are the same as monsters…?”
“Torte, would you accept being told you’re the same creature as a monkey just because you have similar features?”
After a startled realization, Torte lowered her eyebrows apologetically.
“…I understand now. So demons and monsters are as different as humans and monkeys.”
“Thank you for understanding quickly. Certainly, they share the point of adapting to the ‘World’s Distortion.’ However, demons have reason and have built countries just like us humans. Monsters are just beasts. To speak of them on the same level is insulting.”
“I’m sorry, Emi…”
“It’s a common misunderstanding. Actually, it’s caused wars between the Demon Kingdom and the Holy Kingdom.”
Emi merely shrugged lightly at Torte’s apologetic apology without any particular reaction.
The wars between the Holy Kingdom and the Demon Kingdom happened quite a while ago, and the trend of equating demons with monsters is no longer mainstream. However, some people still believe this theory and sometimes take insulting attitudes toward demons.
The fact that such people are even within the church is a headache, but this isn’t the place to discuss it. Emi must have had unpleasant experiences at the church.
“Therefore, demons are sensitive to the presence of the ‘World’s Distortion.’ Let’s understand that they have senses that humans can’t perceive. Right, Torte?”
“Yes, I understand.”
“Good response. …While we were talking, it’s come into view. That is the ‘Doradott Great Sacred Peak,’ the forbidden area designated as ‘impassable.'”
What spread before us was a massive mountain range.
Among them, the particularly large mountain boasted such grandeur that just having it in your field of vision could make you feel awe. Just looking at it could overwhelm you, making some people want to turn back.
It was so beautiful that it might captivate you, but if you set foot even a step into the mountain, it would reveal its true nature. No matter how beautiful, this mountain is already a dungeon itself.
In fact, we could hear a roar like an earthquake from afar. If an ordinary person heard that, it wouldn’t be strange for them to lose consciousness on the spot.
“Emi, that roar just now…”
“Yeah, no doubt about it. …So it’s true that this place is the ‘Dragon’s Lair.'”
When Ange asked for confirmation, Emi nodded affirmatively.
One of the reasons why Doradott Great Sacred Peak is designated as a forbidden area is, as Emi said.
This is a paradise for dragons, who reign at the pinnacle among monsters. Generally, dragons are considered opponents that it’s reckless to confront.
Perhaps because of that, Ange couldn’t hide her tension as she muttered.
“This is the frontier that neither country could make their territory due to the danger level of the nearby dungeon and could only leave as a non-interference zone…”
“Do you really live in a place like this? Even demons wouldn’t live in such a place.”
“Ah, so this isn’t a place where people usually live…”
Emi looked at me with disbelief. In response, Torte sighed gloomily.
“Even so, someone has to monitor the forbidden area.”
“Well, if left alone, the number of monsters would keep increasing.”
“By the way, does the Demon Kingdom also recognize it as a forbidden area?”
“Since improving relations with the Holy Kingdom, I’ve heard that regulations were made to share recognition of threats. In other words, dungeons designated as forbidden areas are those where the erosion has progressed too much, making them impossible to conquer. Even in the Demon Kingdom, where the land is full of dungeons, such places are recognized as untouchable.”
“Speaking of regulations, the standards of threat level specified by both countries are still used by the Adventurer’s Guild today. If dungeons are left unchecked, the erosion will progress infinitely, so it’s necessary to reduce the ‘World’s Distortion’ by thinning out monsters. In the Holy Kingdom, knights and adventurers who make a living by buying and selling monster materials prevent erosion.”
That’s why Saintesses are dispatched to various places and play the role of sealing off monsters by deploying barriers. In a sense, it’s not an exaggeration to say they are considered more important than knights who can defeat monsters.
Well, nowadays, it’s not necessarily the case that this is the correct situation.
“Now, the conversation is getting lively, but we’ll soon arrive at our church.”
While we were talking, our destination came into view, so we had Mr. Lesser Dragon land slowly.
It’s been several years since I came here. For better or worse, I’ve grown attached to it. I was about to go inside when, for some reason, Emi stood with her mouth agape.
Then, as if she had thought of something, Emi quickly approached and grabbed me by the collar.
“…Hey, Sensei. Saintesses are supposed to reside in churches, right? How can you call that a church! That’s called a fortress!!”
Emi shouted while pointing vigorously. Indeed, where she pointed, there was a building rugged and sturdy, hardly something you’d call a church.
“Sharp as ever, Emi. But this is a church. It’s a fortress that was refurbished into a church after being abandoned, so it’s also correct to say it’s a fortress.”
“If you showed this to the bigwigs in the royal capital, they’d hold their heads and start yelling! Claiming this is a church! Why is it a fortress in the first place!?”
“Originally, soldiers were stationed at this fortress to monitor the Doradott Great Sacred Peak, but it was abandoned. As the lord of this area by my position, I seized it under my authority.”
When I said that, Emi’s eyes widened in surprise, and she looked me up and down suspiciously.
“Sensei, do you perhaps hold noble titles other than being a priestess?”
“Yes, I do. The noble titles I hold are priestess, bureaucrat, and knight.”
“Eh… That’s impossible…”
“It’s true.”
In the Holy Kingdom, all territories are owned by the royal family. Nobles certified with noble titles by the royal family and the church are placed there for management—a common governance method.
In one territory, people with qualifications as bureaucrat, knight, and priestess are required, but it’s common for people certified with multiple noble titles to serve concurrently.
Especially in desolate territories like this frontier, where the population is extremely sparse.
“So Sensei was really an outstanding student…”
“Um, is it that amazing to have multiple noble titles?”
“Regarding the noble title of priestess, as long as you serve earnestly as a Saintess, you’ll be certified without any issues. But for bureaucrat, you need appropriate academic ability, and as for knight, there are no Saintesses who obtain that.”
“The role of a knight is to defend the territory—in other words, to fight. But Saintesses can’t use their magic for offense, and since they have other important duties, there’s no need for a Saintess to go so far as to obtain the noble title of knight.”
“Then why does Sensei hold the title of knight…?”
“That’s what I’d like to ask!”
Emi and the others were chatting secretly among themselves, excluding me. Well, it’s good that they seem to be getting along.
As I watched that scene with a gentle smile, I heard a short cry: “Gyaa!”
When I turned around, Mr. Lesser Dragon was looking at me uneasily.
“Come to think of it, what should we do with this little one?”
“Sensei, are you really planning to keep that?”
“I think it’d be convenient if he stays, but can we keep him?”
“…If it’s that Lesser Dragon, since he recognizes Sensei as the leader of the pack, it should be fine.”
“Leader of the pack?”
“Didn’t you beat him down and make him submit? That means he recognized you as a higher existence. Since he’s showing willingness to obey, why not properly keep him? I’ve never heard of keeping them even back home, but if it’s a lower-ranked dragon, they’re raised as livestock, so I think you can observe and adapt based on that.”
“I see… Emi, you know how to care for dragons?”
“Only general knowledge, but I can teach you the basics.”
“That would be helpful.”
I reconsidered the benefits of keeping Mr. Lesser Dragon.
First, like this time, he would be convenient when traveling long distances. Though we might not go often, we could go to nearby towns for shopping.
In this frontier, supplies rely on traveling merchants. Considering that merchants don’t come frequently, having a means of transportation would be appreciated.
Until now, Torte and I lived a self-sufficient life, but now that we’ve welcomed Emi and Ange, securing a way to go to town isn’t a bad idea.
Having reached a conclusion, I turned to Mr. Lesser Dragon again.
“It’ll basically be free-range, but shall we try keeping him? We should train him not to attack people and make a place near the fortress for him to sleep. Is that okay with you?”
I tried asking Mr. Lesser Dragon. I didn’t know how much he understood my words, but he lowered his head and took a lying-down posture.
When I patted his head, he shuddered slightly. Then, as he quietly let me stroke his head, I thought again.
“I’ll take care of you. I look forward to working with you.”
“Gyuu…”
He made a sound like a reply, so I must have gotten his consent. If any problems arise, I’ll have to take responsibility. I need to stay vigilant.
I clapped my hands loudly, making a sharp sound.
“Well then, let’s start moving in. We’ll be busy today.”
* * *
The church we use as our residence has plenty of spare rooms.
Since soldiers used to live here, that’s only natural.
That said, until now, only Torte and I lived here, so we only did minimal cleaning. So first, we have to start with cleaning.
“Since we don’t have much time today, I’ll handle the cleaning. From tomorrow, please make sure to clean your rooms properly yourselves. I’ll conduct surprise inspections.”
“Eh… We don’t need inspections…”
“Listen, Emi. Cleaning is also training to master the powers of a Saintess.”
“What? Are you going to spout some spiritual theory? Like ‘A pure heart houses the power of a Saintess’?”
Emi half-closed her eyes and folded her arms, expressing her dissatisfaction. While there is that aspect, she probably wouldn’t understand if I just explained.
In that case, it might be better to show her first and then explain so she’ll be convinced.
“Then, let me show you how to clean. Please choose your rooms first.”
“I think it’d be convenient if you take the rooms next to mine! The walls are thick, so you won’t be bothered by noise!”
Torte raised her hand enthusiastically. Indeed, it would be easier to clean if we’re grouped together. It would also be fun to gather and chat during breaks. Emi and Ange didn’t seem to have any particular preferences, so they chose the rooms on either side of Torte’s room.
Although the rooms had beds and such, they still felt a bit dusty.
“First, let’s start with Emi’s room. Well then, let’s begin.”
I entered the room and clasped my hands in front of my chest.
I took a deep breath and focused my mind. When using magic, what’s important is to draw a clear image.
Next, using the magic power within my body, I accurately transmit the imagined image to the external magic power. By going through this process, magic realizes the result you envisioned.
In the church, chanting is recommended to standardize and share the images of magic.
However, if you can draw a clear image, you can omit the chant.
Since this is a demonstration, I’ll include the chant when activating the magic.
“—’Manifest my will here. Barrier, repel all dust and dirt, purify.'”
Light spilled from me, illuminating the room. The light spread smoothly throughout the room, covering the entire space.
The light didn’t last very long and eventually faded away. The air I inhaled after the light disappeared was clearer than before I used the magic, and the dustiness was gone.
Yes, well done. With this, Emi should be satisfied.
“Alright, it’s done.”
“Wait a minute.”
“? Is something wrong, Emi?”
For some reason, Emi shouted at me with apparent anger. I don’t understand.
“I specified the dirt in the room as the target to be eliminated and expelled it outside the room. To purify effectively, the trick is to deploy a barrier that wipes away the room’s dirt…”
“Don’t explain something so outrageous as if it’s normal!”
Emi finally stomped her foot and shouted loudly. She was breathing heavily, then pointed her finger at me. Perhaps I should tell her that it’s impolite to point at people.
“Normally, you don’t clean using Saintess magic! Isn’t Saintess magic supposed to be more sacred!? Like purifying the ‘World’s Distortion’ or preventing monsters from invading with barriers! You’re using it for cleaning!? And you combined techniques so casually!”
“A skilled magic user combines various spells to manipulate them.”
“No, a Saintess isn’t a magic user!”
“That’s just because they’re called Saintesses; in reality, they can only use holy attribute magic, right?”
“Th-That’s… true, but…”
In other words, a Saintess is just a magic user who can only use holy attribute magic.
And it’s well known that masters of magic combine various spells. When I pointed that out, Emi’s voice grew smaller as if she couldn’t refute. Then she started groaning while holding her head.
“Is it me who’s weird? Or is it this person…!?”
“Clearly, it’s Sensei who’s abnormal, so don’t worry.”
Ange gently told Emi to reassure her. Before I knew it, the number of people treating me as abnormal had increased.
“Right! So Sensei is abnormal! I didn’t know because I had no one else to ask!”
Torte, who often treats me as abnormal, looked delighted as if she had found an ally. She ran over to the two of them, and they held hands, rejoicing together.
Is it just my imagination, or am I being left out?
Emi, who was holding hands with Torte in a daze, seemed to realize something and cast a suspicious glance at Torte.
“Wait a minute, Torte. Can you do this too?”
“Of course! Emi and Ange will be able to do it soon too!”
“Eh.”
“…Eh?”
“…Huh?”
For some reason, Emi and Ange looked at each other. Then, as an indescribable atmosphere settled, Ange asked me as if to regain her composure.
“Sensei, I’d like to hear more about the mechanism of the magic you just used.”
“Very well. First, clearly envision purifying dirt as the target. After purification, by deploying a barrier, you can prevent dirt from accumulating. This way, you can keep the room clean for a long time.”
“…Thank you. It was a very easy-to-understand explanation, yet I couldn’t comprehend a thing—a rare experience.”
“Oh…? That’s strange…?”
I have no recollection of giving an explanation that would cause such a bizarre experience.
As I tilted my head, looking at Ange, she nodded heavily.
“Yes. I understand well that Sensei is strange. So it’s okay.”
“I’d like to question how it’s okay, but… I’ve heard that you two haven’t been diligently honing your Saintess powers. However, if I teach you, you’ll surely be able to do it. The most important things are the willingness to improve and the number of attempts.”
“Um, is this conversation making sense?”
“Emi, sometimes Sensei seems to be having a conversation but isn’t, so it’s okay.”
“That’s not okay at all! Is this really fine!? I’m getting worried!”
While Emi and Torte were fussing, facing each other, the conversation wasn’t progressing. I clapped my hands to draw their attention and tried to steer the conversation back on track.
“Well then, after finishing cleaning Ange’s room, I’ll prepare dinner. Torte, please help them unpack.”
“Are you just going to gloss over it!? Hey!”
Emi was shouting about something, but perhaps she was just overly sensitive due to the long journey.
Once their rooms are ready, they should calm down a bit. Hunger might also be a reason for their restlessness. In that case, I should prepare quickly. I need to make a delicious meal to soothe their travel fatigue.
Thinking that, I left the rest to Torte and headed to the dining hall.
* * *
By the time I finished cooking meals for the four of us, Torte and the others came to the dining hall, perhaps having finished unpacking.
“Sensei, we’ve finished unpacking!”
“Good work, everyone. The meal is almost ready.”
Today’s menu is bread and a hearty stew filled with fresh vegetables. I splurged by adding some of the meat we had stored, so even though the number of dishes is few, they should be satisfied.
Since I didn’t know how much Emi and Ange would eat, I chose stew, which is easy to serve the next day. It’s easy to adjust the amount they eat, so I can estimate how much food they’ll need.
“Emi and Ange, please have a seat. Torte, please bring the plates.”
“Okay!”
I asked Torte to set the table, and the two of us brought out the stew.
For some reason, when she saw the food laid out on the table, Emi let out a heartfelt sigh of relief.
“…Thank goodness. The meal is normal.”
“What did you think would be served?”
“I thought some weird dish would come out that I’d have to keep commenting on…”
“You say that as if only weird things have been coming out.”
“Because it has been weird things!”
“Sensei! Please don’t make Emi angry! Our precious meal will get cold!”
Torte raised her hand in protest. I didn’t intend to make her angry.
“Well then, please enjoy it while it’s hot.”
“Um, then let’s give thanks for today’s blessings!”
Torte cheerfully offered a pre-meal prayer. Following Torte, Emi and Ange also offered prayers and sipped the stew.
“…Mmm!”
“…This is…”
After taking a bite, Emi’s stern expression softened, and her eyes widened. Next to her, Ange also widened her eyes but quickly returned to her usual expression.
Their reactions differed, but there seemed to be no problem with the taste.
Emi began eating the stew faster and faster. Each time, her expression softened, turning into a smile like a blooming flower.
“Delicious! I might be eating such fresh and tasty vegetables for the first time!”
“Not only is it fresh, but the flavor is rich too.”
“It’s good, isn’t it?”
“Yes, I’m a bit surprised. I didn’t think we’d be able to eat something so delicious in the frontier…”
“It might be the most delicious among the meals I’ve had.”
“That’s good to hear.”
I watched the two of them empty their bowls one after another, feeling satisfied.
“Would you like seconds?”
“Yes!”
“…Me too, please.”
“Sure, eat as much as you like. Also, Emi, please clean your mouth.”
When I pointed it out, Emi hurriedly wiped her mouth with her sleeve. I wasn’t sure about that either, but I decided not to nag too much. I stood up and handed them their seconds.
The two who received seconds began eating a bit faster. Watching them eat so heartily, Torte tilted her head.
“Are these vegetables really that amazing that even you two, who seem to have eaten lots of delicious food, find them tasty?”
“…Torte. Could it be that you’re misunderstanding something?”
“Eh?”
“At least in my case, I don’t recall indulging in luxurious vegetables.”
“Is that so!? I thought that since you’re royalty, you’d be eating good food…”
“That’s just being deceived by the name. Just because I’m royalty doesn’t mean I always eat delicious food.”
“Food circumstances differ by country. For the record, this is undoubtedly more delicious than the meals I ate at the castle before I entered the church as a Saintess candidate.”
“Heeeh… It’s being praised that much…”
After briefly pausing her meal, Ange explained to Torte. Torte shuddered and groaned, then poked at the vegetables with her spoon. Her manners were a bit lacking.
When I cleared my throat lightly, Torte hastily stopped poking at the vegetables. Good.
“Now I realize I don’t know anything about demons or the Demon Kingdom…”
“Being royalty isn’t such a big deal. It’s just that it’s convenient for the Vivres to unite the demons, so they’re called emperors. Not all demons swear loyalty to the royal family.”
“Is that so?”
In response to Torte’s muttered words, Emi spoke without stopping her meal.
I thought about scolding her for bad manners, but since Torte showed interest in Emi’s story, I’d postpone the scolding.
“There are quite a few demons who’ve adapted too much to their environment and stay holed up there. Obvious ones are elves and mermaids. Elves weaken noticeably when they leave the forests they’ve designated as their territory, and mermaids become pathetic like stranded fish if they’re not near water. There aren’t many who willingly leave their domains. Those who do are considered oddballs.”
“Heeeh!”
Torte nodded with interest at Emi’s explanation. Perhaps pleased by this, Emi’s expression softened considerably.
“So demons are relatively closed off?”
“That depends on the race. That’s why Vivres are considered emperors. Vivres are a race less influenced by the environment, so they’re suited to moving around. What they do is pretty much going around and beating up any idiots who get carried away, making them listen.”
“Beating up…?”
“The national character of respecting the strong was cultivated through such a culture. They’re called emperors, but in reality, it’s more accurate to say they’re the leaders of the Demon Alliance.”
As Torte showed confusion, Ange added an explanation.
Emi snorted and leaned her cheek on her hand. Since she was about to continue eating like that, I couldn’t overlook it.
“Emi, please don’t lean your elbow on the table.”
“…Yeah, yeah.”
“Somehow, the environment itself is different from the Holy Kingdom.”
“Completely different. Some even say that the reason they call themselves emperors is out of rivalry with the Holy Kingdom. Everyone’s so proud and annoying.”
“Heeeh! But I feel like I can understand by looking at you, Emi!”
“Hey? What do you mean by that?”
“Please don’t fight during meals.”
When I cautioned Emi, who was glaring at Torte, I heard a small clicking of the tongue.
As Torte, realizing her slip of the tongue, looked away, Ange opened her mouth as if to change the atmosphere.
“By the way, Vivres have the trait of inheriting the characteristics of the races they mate with, right?”
“What is it, all of a sudden? Yes, that’s true.”
“Isn’t that another reason why Vivres became the leaders? It’s easier to form alliances through marriage, right? I’ve heard that the emperor has many wives.”
“Ah, yeah. It’s rare for my siblings to have the same parents.”
“Um, inheriting the characteristics of the races they mate with means…?”
“Hmm? For example, the mermaids I mentioned earlier are good at water magic since they live near water. When a Vivre and a mermaid mate, their child is often born as a Vivre skilled in water magic.”
“Heeeh, is that a trait unique to Vivres?”
“There’s no other race where the influence is as prominent as with Vivres. Vivres inherit the blood of dragons, and since there are many types of dragons, it might be reflected in the traits of Vivres.”
“The fact that they can easily incorporate the blood of other races can be said to be a trait befitting a leader. It’s natural that Vivres came to be called royalty.”
“What’s this, Ange? You’re praising them a lot. Are you in a good mood?”
“Because I had a delicious meal.”
“Well, that’s true. That makes the tongue more fluent. By the way, Vivres live while traveling around their territories. Demons are mostly those who think the stronger one is superior and start petty disputes over territorial claims. The emperor’s job is to stop those who go too far by force.”
“Ah, so… the Demon Kingdom is quite an impressive place.”
Torte whispered softly, sounding overwhelmed. Emi chuckled at Torte’s reaction.
“That’s why we only eat vegetables that can be preserved for a long time; fresh ones only appear when we’re being specially treated. In the Demon Kingdom, a feast usually means game you’ve hunted yourself. So to me, just having fresh vegetables is a luxury. And when they’re this delicious, there’s nothing to complain about.”
“By the way, is the tastiness of these vegetables unique to the frontier?”
“Eh?”
At Ange’s casual question, Torte froze with a smile still on her face.
Seeing her reaction, Emi’s cheerful expression from moments before turned stern.
“…Hey, Torte?”
“Well, um, that’s… You’ll probably find out soon enough.”
“Wait a minute. Don’t tell me there’s something about these vegetables too? Torte, look me in the eyes.”
“I don’t mind the excitement, but please continue eating. I won’t allow any leftovers.”
Thinking they’d been talking too much, I urged them to eat. When I pointed it out, Emi resumed her meal, though she seemed somewhat unsatisfied.
Judging by the pace of their eating, Emi was likely to eat the most. Ange might be holding back, but that could change once she gets accustomed.
There’s no need to rush. We can deepen our bonds gradually.
“Let me inform you in advance. Starting tomorrow morning, you’ll all begin training to master the powers of a Saintess. Torte, you know what to expect, so please wear clothes that can get dirty. Also, please wake the other two and bring them along.”
“Understood.”
“What kind of training will it be?”
“You’ll find out tomorrow.”
“…I’m anxious.”
Emi muttered with genuine unease.
I said it would be something to look forward to—why is she so worried?
“We’re up awfully early for training… Sensei?”
“Yes, Emi? What is it?”
“What is this?”
“As you can see, it’s a field.”
“‘As you can see’…?”
At my answer, Emi furrowed her brow, crossing her arms as if to express clear dissatisfaction.
“Are you telling us to plant crops and use ‘Blessing’ on them?”
“Oh, sharp as ever.”
“Well, performing the ‘Blessing of Abundance’ is one of the duties of a Saintess.”
As Ange mentioned, the ‘Blessing of Abundance’ is one of the Saintess’s duties and a reason why Saintesses are revered in the Holy Kingdom.
By casting ‘Blessing,’ a Saintess can bring about a bountiful harvest.
Food is essential for human survival. It’s natural that expectations placed on Saintesses are high.
I also recognize that the ‘Blessing of Abundance’ is crucial for the upcoming training.
“I want you all to plant crops in this field and use ‘Blessing’ to accelerate their growth. As you know, the stronger the power of ‘Blessing,’ the better the yield of the crops, right?”
“…Wait, does that mean yesterday’s vegetables…?”
“I grew and harvested them myself.”
“…It’s frustrating how much that makes sense.”
Emi muttered with genuine vexation. Perhaps she’s amazed by my abilities, which is why she’s frustrated. Probably, surely that’s it.
“Well then, let me demonstrate first.”
“Even if you say ‘demonstrate,’ we can at least perform the ‘Blessing of Abundance’ ourselves…”
“Let’s begin.”
“Hey, listen to me!”
Emi was saying something, but to properly demonstrate, I needed to focus. I clasped my hands together and concentrated my mind on the field before me.
Handling this magic requires delicate manipulation of magical energy. Therefore, I carefully visualized the process. Since it’s a demonstration, I made sure to weave the incantation properly.
“—’Manifest my will here, answer my prayer, grant us great bounty.'”
At first, there was a very small change. Tiny sprouts began to emerge from the previously barren field. Using that as a starting point, the sprouts grew rapidly.
Their growth didn’t stop, and by the time I finished my prayer, a lush green field had spread before us.
Confirming the success of the magic, I turned my gaze to Emi and the others.
“Phew, it’s done. Now, please prepare for the harvest.”
“…Wait, hold on a minute, Sensei.”
Emi pressed her hand to her forehead, a pained expression on her face.
Could she be feeling unwell all of a sudden? That wouldn’t be good.
“Emi, you look pale. Are you alright?”
“That’s not the issue! What is this!? This ‘Blessing’ is nothing like the one I know!!”
“But it is the ‘Blessing of Abundance.’ Also, shouting when you’re unwell isn’t good for you.”
“Who do you think is making me shout!? The effect of the ‘Blessing’ is way too different!”
“…Ah, so this isn’t normal after all.”
“Of course not, Torte! There’s no way this is normal! I thought you lacked common sense before, but this is beyond that! This is utterly absurd!”
“Even I find this a bit overwhelming. I’m not sure if any other Saintess could do this…”
Emi pointed at me and roared, and even Ange shook her head from side to side.
“Well, perhaps not at this speed, but Torte has the skill to make crops harvestable in about a week. So, Emi and Ange, you’ll be able to do it too.”
“Torte…? You’re on that side too…!?”
“P-Please stop! Don’t look at me like I’m some kind of freak!”
The three stood there stunned, but Emi stepped back from Torte as if she couldn’t believe it. Ange, for her part, took two steps back.
“What!? You’re telling us to do this too!?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying.”
“Impossible! No way! Normally, the ‘Blessing of Abundance’ only slightly improves the harvest! How did you make it like this!?”
“Perhaps I should have started with an explanation?”
“Obviously!! If you’re a teacher, explain properly! Start with the explanation!!”
“Oh dear, that was careless of me. Well then, where should I begin?”
Emi was furious with me, and rightly so. I must reflect on this.
“How exactly did you achieve such rapid growth? As far as I know, even the highest-ranking Saintesses can’t do this.”
“Ange, it’s simply a different way of using the power. Normally, the ‘Blessing of Abundance’ is evaluated based on how wide an area it can cover, not the speed of growth, correct?”
“…Yes, that’s right.”
“In my ‘Blessing of Abundance,’ it’s difficult to cover a wide area. This method is feasible precisely because the field is this size.”
“…I don’t think narrowing the range is the solution.”
“Indeed. Simply narrowing the range only reduces energy consumption; it doesn’t amplify the effect to this extent.”
“Then how did you do it?”
“I combined Purification and Barrier techniques.”
“…What?”
Emi looked at me with wide eyes, as if she didn’t understand what I was saying.
Next to her, Ange wore a similar expression. Watching them, Torte nodded as if she finally understood.
“So it was quite an extreme method after all…”
“Torte, it’s actually simple when I explain it. By efficiently combining ‘Purification,’ ‘Barrier,’ and ‘Blessing,’ that’s all there is to it.”
“…My head hurts even more now. What kind of brute-force method is that?”
“It’s not like I’m doing it recklessly. You just need to master using the Saintess’s powers as naturally as breathing.”
“…You get this kind of effect just by activating all the Saintess’s magic simultaneously?”
“Well, in the church’s education, they don’t teach using the Saintess’s magic this way. Normally, there’s no need to acquire this technique.”
“That’s true…”
“Since a Saintess is the only one who can purify the ‘World’s Distortion,’ they are inevitably placed in a protected role because they don’t have offensive magic.”
“…Well, that’s true.”
Emi snorted in displeasure. Considering her temperament, it’s understandable that she doesn’t like being in a protected position.
“Due to the nature of their power, Saintesses are expected to use their abilities widely and over a long period, even if the effects are subtle. So, my way of using power is considered unconventional.”
That’s probably why the church wants to ostracize me as a heretic because they can’t accept my way. Well, I don’t care about their agendas. I have a purpose to fulfill, so I won’t stop no matter what they say.
“There are three skills required to master magic. What are they, Torte?”
“Um… ‘Emission,’ ‘Formation,’ and ‘Enchantment.'”
“Correct. Emission is about magic output, Formation is about magic control, and Enchantment focuses on maintaining magic. This applies to the Saintess’s magic as well.”
“Emission corresponds to ‘Purification,’ Formation to ‘Barrier,’ and Enchantment to ‘Blessing,’ right?”
“That’s right, Ange. We shape magic by manipulating magical energy. To achieve the desired effect, mastering these aspects is crucial.”
“If we think of it in terms of regular magic, that’s true, but…”
“Honestly, it’s challenging to learn. Moreover, if you live as an ordinary Saintess, you don’t need this power, but I want you both to master the Saintess’s magic that I teach.”
“…Why?”
Ange asked quietly, her eyes fixed straight on me as if trying to see through something.
I realized I needed to answer sincerely. After taking a breath, I replied.
“Because if you master this power, you’ll feel confident to pursue your own path, no matter what others say.”
“To pursue our own path…?”
“Without power, you can’t accomplish anything. Especially you two have probably been buffeted by various agendas.”
The statuses bestowed upon them were both a blessing and a curse.
Because of that, they’ve been hurt and have developed twisted hearts. Emi is aggressive toward others, and Ange hides her emotions to prevent anyone from understanding what she’s thinking.
By chance, I became their teacher. What I can teach them is how to use this power and its potential. And help them choose their future by their own will. I believe that’s what I should do.
“I’m planning to teach you everything I know. I am confident that this power will bring new options to you both.”
“…I see.”
Hearing my words, Ange only murmured that and fell silent. She seemed deep in thought, so it’s best not to disturb her now.
Emi, too, wore a solemn expression, perhaps contemplating something. Noticing me watching her, she shook her head as if to clear her thoughts and glared at me.
“…I understand that activating all the magic makes the ‘Blessing of Abundance’ ridiculously effective, but could you explain exactly how you’re doing it, Sensei?”
“First, I use ‘Purification’ to convert magical energy into a form that’s easier for me to handle. Next, I deploy a ‘Barrier’ to maintain the purified magical energy in its pure state. Finally, by using the enhanced magical energy from ‘Purification’ and ‘Barrier,’ I cast ‘Blessing.'”
“That’s way more information than I expected! You said it was simple, but it’s incredibly complicated, isn’t it!?”
“Is that so?”
“You…!”
“Um, you said that purifying magical energy makes it easier to handle? This is the first I’ve heard of it…”
“Oh, Torte. You hadn’t noticed? It’s said that the Saintess’s magical energy retains a strong influence from the Goddess. Other attributes are probably bestowed by fragments of the subordinate gods, right? This is partly a hypothesis based on my experience, but the subordinate gods were originally created by the Goddess, correct?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
“So, tracing back to the source, even the subordinate gods lead back to the Goddess.”
“That’s why you purify? If the Goddess is the origin, then by purifying magical energy, it becomes closer to the Goddess’s magic…?”
“That’s how I see it. However, no matter how much you purify, if you leave it alone, it reverts back. There must be some condition needed to maintain the purified state.”
“Maintaining the purified magical energy is important… So that’s why you use ‘Barrier.'”
“Exactly. By enclosing the purified Saintess’s magical energy within a ‘Barrier,’ you reduce contact with the outside world and preserve its state.”
“And then, while maintaining the purified state, you connect it to ‘Blessing’…”
“Yes. Perfect score, Ange. If you can do all this as naturally as breathing, your crops will grow at this speed. They’ll also become tastier.”
“That’s why! Stop expecting us to do such outrageous things as if they’re normal!”
“Emi, why are you angry…? I explained properly…”
“Do you think we can do it just because you explained!?”
“Well, I did say yesterday that it’s about willingness and the number of attempts.”
“So in the end, it’s all about grit…!?”
“This is just how Sensei always is…”
“…You’ve had a hard time, Torte.”
“You understand me, Emi…!”
Emi and Torte looked at each other and hugged tightly. For some reason, I feel like their friendship is deepening at my expense. I don’t get it.
Well, since we’ll be sharing joys and sorrows from now on, it’s better if they get along. I’ll have to accept being left out. This must be a teacher’s sad fate.
“Now that the explanation is over, let’s start harvesting. After today’s harvest, you’ll each create your own fields, so from tomorrow, please work hard to harvest from your own plots.”
“Wait, create fields?”
“Yes.”
“…From tilling the soil?”
“Yes. This way, you can train your bodies while securing food. I believe it’s an ideal method, if I may say so myself.”
“…Hey, Torte?”
“Hahaha, that’s why I told you. You’ll get used to it eventually…”
“Your eyes look dead…”
“Same to you, Emi…”
“Hehehe, hahaha,” the two laughed as they looked at each other. Then Emi swayed unsteadily but managed to steady herself while holding her head.
To cheer up Emi, I offered some words.
“Emi, are you… getting cold feet? Or do you prefer a life gnawing on preserved food?”
“That’s a threat, isn’t it!? Fine, I’ll do it! And Ange! Why are you starting ahead of us!? Don’t leave us behind!”
“Oh, Emi! Ange! Wait for me!”
While Emi was messing around with Torte, Ange had already begun harvesting. The two hurriedly chased after her.
Watching them fondly, I called out to the three.
“Don’t forget to stay hydrated. Now, let’s work hard again today.”
A week had passed since we began cultivating the fields as training to enhance the Saintess’s powers.
During that time, Emi collapsed onto the ground in exhaustion, lying spread-eagle as she shouted.
“This is impossible! I knew it from the start!”
“…I have to admit, this is tough.”
Next to Emi, Ange sat down, her shoulders slumped.
Usually composed to hide her emotions, even she couldn’t conceal the fatigue-induced weariness.
Seeing them like that, Torte offered them drinks, speaking with concern.
“A-Are you okay? Emi, Ange?”
“Torte… You seem energetic?”
“Eh? Well, I’m used to it…”
“Used to it… Is this something you can get used to?”
Emi muttered absently, gazing into the distance, and Ange let out a deep sigh. Observing them, I looked over the fields they had tilled.
First, Emi’s field. It was properly set up as a field. With her physical strength, manual labor wasn’t an issue. But that’s where she stopped.
Next, Ange’s field. Compared to Emi’s, it was less thoroughly tilled and looked inferior. However, sprouts had already begun to emerge.
Lastly, Torte’s field. Her field had already grown to a harvestable state. After comparing the three fields, I called out to them.
“Hmm… Emi, Ange, Torte. Let’s pause the work and gather for a moment.”
When I called, Torte came over immediately. Emi and Ange took a bit longer to stand up but lined up beside Torte.
“I’ve been observing your work up to today… Emi, Ange, do you understand the difference between yourselves and Torte?”
“…Yes.”
Emi nodded solemnly. Though she didn’t voice it, Ange seemed to feel the same, wearing a similar expression.
“I won’t say there’s no need to feel down, but Torte has been training under me for three years. It’s natural that there’s a difference.”
“Well… that’s true…”
“Conversely, if there were no difference, I’d have to reassess Torte’s training.”
“That’s scary! You’re saying something as frightening as a sudden death sentence, Sensei!”
“What do you think I am, Torte?”
Why would reevaluating my teaching equate to a death sentence? Maybe we need to have a detailed discussion about this sometime.
Anyway, back to the main topic.
“I sensed that you might have thought that honing the Saintess’s powers isn’t valuable. Regardless of your reasons, I understood that was your perspective. However, if you’re going to study under me, you needed to change that thinking.”
“…Rather than deciding to change, you were intent on breaking our spirits to make us change, weren’t you?”
Oddly, even Emi was looking at me the way Torte does.
It sounds like they’re implying I’m not good at holding back, but let’s just consider it my imagination.
“Now that you’ve gauged your abilities, let’s change our approach. From now on, I’d like you three to work together to cultivate the fields.”
“Work together…?”
The three tilted their heads quizzically. I cleared my throat lightly and continued.
“Ahem. First, Emi, you’ll be in charge of ‘Purification.’ Among the three of you, you have the greatest talent for purification. Focus on mastering ‘Purification.’ Feeling your own power should motivate you, right?”
“…It’s unsettling how well you see through me.”
Emi looked genuinely displeased but didn’t outright refuse. I was worried she’d become stubborn here, but it seems my concern was unnecessary.
“Next, Ange, you’ll handle ‘Barrier.’ Your manipulation of magical energy is remarkable. By practicing repeatedly, you’ll discover your potential. I’m confident this will be your first step forward.”
As expected, Ange didn’t respond verbally but furrowed her brow. She did nod slightly, so I’ll assume she agreed.
“And Torte, you’ll be in charge of ‘Blessing.’ You’re skilled with ‘Blessing,’ so it should be easy for you. Support the other two as their big sister, and help them develop their strengths.”
“B-Big sister role…! Yes, Sensei! Understood!”
Torte reacted strongly to the term ‘big sister,’ replying firmly.
I called her that, but compared to the other two, she’s shorter, so she appears more adorable than reliable.
I know I’d get scolded if I said that aloud, so I won’t.
“Now, as a reward for your hard work so far, I’d like to show you something.”
“A reward…?”
“It’s a glimpse of the possibilities that lie ahead for you. First, when handling magic, manipulating magical energy is also crucial. The better you are at controlling it, the more your physical abilities improve as the magic circulates through your body, giving you an advantage in battle.”
I stepped away from the three and slowly took a stance to demonstrate.
As I assumed the stance, I circulated magical energy throughout my body, heightening my focus. Noticing my rising energy, Emi’s expression grew tense.
“Next, I use ‘Purification’ to optimize the magical energy, and then, by applying ‘Barrier,’ I circulate it through my body. In this state, casting ‘Blessing’ on myself further enhances my physical abilities. Combining the enhancement from magical manipulation and ‘Blessing’—”
With a light push off the ground, I took a small, hopping step. But my body, already strengthened by magic and ‘Blessing,’ propelled forward swiftly, gliding over the earth.
Changing angles several times, I positioned myself behind the three, who had already lost sight of me.
“—Like this, you can achieve speeds that are untraceable to the average eye.”
“Behind us…!?”
“I couldn’t see…!?”
“Ah, I knew you were coming, but reacting is impossible…”
Realizing I was behind them, Emi and Ange turned quickly. Their identical expressions of disbelief showed just how surprised they were.
Torte, having some familiarity, seemed to at least sense my presence, but she’s still not there yet.
“By further mastering ‘Purification,’ you can interfere not only with the ‘World’s Distortion’ but also with magic itself. This allows you to nullify magic and, combined with your enhanced physical abilities, close in on your opponent.”
I distanced myself from them again and took a stance.
This time, to showcase my movements, I carefully traced the motions I envisioned.
“Finally, ‘Barrier.’ By mastering it, you can transform it into various forms. It can be applied not just defensively but offensively as well. Let me demonstrate.”
Lowering my posture, I planted my feet firmly. I twisted my right hand, holding it ready at my waist.
Deep breath in, once, twice. Confirming my breathing was steady, I paused. Then, as if unleashing everything at once, I swung my right arm.
At that moment, a barrier unfolded around my right hand. Thin, sharp, and elongated, the barrier extended from my hand like a sword, slicing through the earth and air. The air flowed into the path traced by my arm, chasing after the remnants of the barrier.
“In this way, deploying a ‘Barrier’ that’s infinitely thin and sharpened to perfection holds the potential to surpass even the finest swords. This is one of the pinnacles that lies beyond mastering the Saintess’s powers. While the magic a Saintess can use doesn’t include spells that directly attack, by mastering all of them, such possibilities are unlocked.”
Emi and Ange were left speechless, simply staring at me. I couldn’t tell what each of them was thinking.
Hoping that my words would resonate in their hearts, I conveyed my own goal.
“This is the ideal Saintess I strive to be—the ‘strongest who can defeat a thousand enemies single-handedly.'”
Even if no one acknowledges me, that’s fine. It’s a vow I’ve engraved upon myself to fulfill without fail.
Saying it aloud made me feel a bit embarrassed, exposing my true feelings, but unless I opened up first, their closed hearts wouldn’t open.
“Ha… haha, ahahaha! Ahahahahaha! A Saintess who can take on a thousand foes? The strongest? Sensei, are you serious!? What is that!”
Emi laughed as if she found it genuinely hilarious, covering her face with both hands.
Her tone might sound mocking, but her voice didn’t carry contempt.
She seemed on the verge of trembling, yet tried to act strong to hide it. Whatever swirling emotions she was experiencing, only Emi herself would know.
After laughing for a while, Emi slowly regulated her breathing. Still unsettled, she forced out words in a thin, faltering voice.
“What on earth do you want to achieve by becoming so strong…?”
“My objective? Well…”
I touched my lips thoughtfully for a moment, then directed my gaze toward the distant Doradott Great Sacred Peak. While looking at its majestic presence, I voiced my answer.
“Perhaps it’s to conquer the forbidden dungeon alone. That’s my goal.”
“Are you serious?”
“Of course.”
Otherwise, I wouldn’t say such a thing. As I thought that, Emi burst into laughter again.
“Emi, you have superior physical abilities inherited from the Vivres. In that respect, you might have more talent than me.”
“Actually, it’d be embarrassing if I lost in a fistfight! Fine, I’ll definitely surpass you, Sensei…! Just you watch!”
“Yes, I’ll be watching over you.”
With this attitude, Emi should be fine.
Now, the remaining issue is Ange. As I was thinking that, she called out to me.
“Sensei Tia.”
“What is it, Ange?”
“…Why did you…”
“…Ange?”
“…Never mind.”
Ange didn’t finish her question and closed her mouth.
She averted her gaze from me, so perhaps she would reject me if I tried to speak to her.
Noticing Ange’s behavior, Emi looked at her curiously and began whispering with Torte, who was nearby.
“What’s up with Ange? What’s wrong with her?”
“Could it be that she’s turned off by Sensei?”
“I wonder? I don’t think that’s the case… But I really don’t understand what she’s thinking.”
“Eh? Aren’t you and Ange close?”
“Not really. We just hung out because our circumstances were similar. Both of us were treated like outcasts. It was easier for others to lump us together and leave us alone.”
“That’s a deplorable story.”
What a waste, I thought.
We’ve only just met, but my intuition tells me they have talent.
Yet they’ve closed their hearts due to various circumstances and lived rejecting those around them. Do they realize what a loss that is?
I wonder if those who pushed them into unfavorable positions truly understand. As I felt indignant, Emi noticed my mood and looked at me. After observing me cautiously, she timidly asked.
“Um, Sensei? Are you angry?”
“Yes, I think it’s an unforgivable failure for the church, which governs education, not to be able to nurture children with such potential.”
“…Well, even if you say that, it doesn’t really sink in.”
Emi looked away from me as if to hide her embarrassment.
Though she often acted rebellious, she would listen if she opened her heart.
She was called a problem child, but it wasn’t just her issue. The society that labeled her as such also had problems.
That’s why, as a teacher, I must be firm. I have to guide Emi, Ange, and Torte so they can proudly be considered wonderful people.
“Don’t worry. You just need to focus on yourselves. For things beyond your control, I’ll handle them as your teacher.”
“…That doesn’t really sit well with me. Besides, Ange is a tough one.”
“I kind of understand how Ange feels. So there’s no need to worry.”
“Wait? You? Understand someone’s feelings? You’ve got to be joking!”
“…Torte, do you perhaps think I lack the ability to understand human emotions?”
Why does she have to interject like that? I think we need to have a frank talk—thoroughly.
“Ouch! I don’t think you’re a monster who can’t understand people, so please stop grabbing my head! I don’t want my head to go ‘boom’! Emi, help me!!”
“Even if you ask for help, what do you mean by ‘head going boom’!? What’s she going to do to you!?”
“Haha, it’s just Torte’s joke. Well then, shall we resume our training?”
“Hey! Don’t just move the conversation along as if nothing happened!”
Emi shouted energetically. If she’s this lively, she’ll probably do her best in the upcoming training.
I’ll put my heart into it as a teacher as well.
