Epilogue: “I’m the Only One Who Needs to Know the Secret of the Perfect, Prim and Proper Committee Chair Living Under the Same Roof”

After the test of courage, Kasumino Matsuri’s confession, and various promises with Chika, a lot had happened.

Despite all these events, my life the next day hadn’t changed much.

“Good morning, Takkun.”

“Ah, good morning, Kasumino Matsuri.”

It was a typical morning. Today, thanks to Chika waking me up, I headed to school a bit earlier than usual.

After greeting Kasumino Matsuri, who arrived later, I glanced at her foot.

“Is your foot okay?”

“Ah, yeah. It’s totally fine. Maybe it was some kind of spiritual disturbance or something.”

“Should I get my dad to perform an exorcism? He’s quite renowned for it.”

“I’ll pass; can’t afford it.”

Our exchange was the usual casual banter. Kasumino Matsuri’s attitude hadn’t changed at all, making yesterday’s confession seem like a lie.

Or maybe I had made a big misunderstanding.

Was her confession just a joke?

“About yesterday’s confession. That was totally serious, you know.”

As if reading my mind, Kasumino Matsuri preempted my thoughts, leaving me speechless.

“How did you know what I was thinking?”

“Well, I can guess what Takkun might think. You tend to undervalue yourself.”

“Ugh…”

She patted my back and then headed to her seat with her usual brisk smile.

I rubbed my back where she had patted. It’s fine for her to be playful, but it did hurt a bit.

However, I was relieved that things weren’t awkward between us today.

At the very least, Kasumino Matsuri is an indispensable friend to me—I hope it stays that way.

While preparing for class, I suddenly noticed a shadow over me.

Looking up, I was surprised to find Chika standing there.

“Ch… Kurokawa, what’s up?”

“I was asked to distribute some materials before the second period chemistry class… so I wanted your help.”

“You could have told me before the first period… Well, okay. What do I need to do?”

“They’re in the science prep room; just need to carry them.”

Leaving for such a student task. I shrugged and agreed, leaving the classroom with Chika to head to the science room on the third floor.

In the back of the science room, in a small dark prep room with no windows to keep sunlight out, we started searching.

“It should be in a box marked ‘For Class Use’… but which one?”

Chika looked around the shelves with a hint of anxiety. I joined her in the search, and that’s when it happened.

The fluorescent light, nearing its end, suddenly flickered and went out. Then—

“GYAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!”

Her scream was probably the loudest I’d heard recently. As I pondered this, Chika clung to me with tremendous force, and the light flickered back to life. Did her scream somehow revive the light? Impossible.

Chika, still clinging to my waist, looked up at me with tearful eyes and murmured.

“Takkun…”

Hearing the commotion, footsteps approached from outside the science room. I stepped out of the prep room, leaving Chika behind for a moment, to be greeted by several teachers.

“What are you doing here?”

“We were asked to bring some materials for the chemistry class.”

“I see… But, we thought we heard a terrifying scream just now… Do you know anything about it?”

“A scream…? Sorry, I don’t know.”

After a brief exchange, the teachers left, looking puzzled. I returned to the prep room to help Chika up.

“Are you okay, Chika?”

“Yeah… somehow… Thanks, Takkun…”

“Wipe your tears. You can’t go out looking like that.”

“Okay…”

Watching Chika wipe her eyes, I couldn’t help but smile wryly.

I thought she had gotten better at dealing with her fears, but it seemed I couldn’t let my guard down just yet. If she screamed like this in front of others, it could ruin everything.

The secret of the perfect, prim, and proper committee chair’s loud screams should remain known only to me, living under the same roof.
