  • [Tutorial] How to make its first Cosplay

  • May 18, 2012

  • Introduction

This tutorial is destined for people who want to cosplay but who don’t know how to begin. When I began Cosplay, I didn’t know how to begin and I was totally lost. That’s why I hope my help will be useful ! I’m not going to explain how to buy Cosplay but I’m going to show you how to make it by yourself ! I think making cosplay by ourselves makes us very proud rather than buying it. If you prefer buying your Cosplay, this tutorial can’t help you, sorry =P

    Choosing its character

There is only you who can choose your future Cosplay !! Nobody can tell you which character you have to make ! You should choose a character that you like. However, you have to choose it thinking about an other standard : physique ! For instance, skin color, stoutness, shape of the face, and so on… Concerning girls, if you look like a little girl like me, you shouldn’t cosplay a mature woman like Yuuko :

You’re novice, that’s why I advise you to choose a character which is easy to make. Don’t launch into Sakizou Cosplay if you’ve never sewn !! xD

For instance, if you are a girl, you should begin to Cosplay Rikku, Tifa, Sakura, Lucy…

For instance, if you are a boy, you should begin to Cosplay  Natsu, Sasuke, Sacha…

These characters are not the only you can make ! I’ve just told you some characters which are often cosplayed because they are very popular and easy to make !

    Analysing character’s outfit

You have to download a lot of pictures about the character you have choosen. Then, you’ll be able to see all the details on its outfit !   Let’s choose Natsu from Fairy Tail :

This is what you need :

    •  Wig
    • Scarf
    • Jacket
    • Belt
    • Trousers
    • Half-skirt
    • Shoes
    • Bracelet

You can draw to learn more about some parts of the outfit. I know when I draw, it permits to learn how I’ll do to realise a specific thing.

    Realisation

That’s the part I love a lot in the Cosplay : realising, creating, making.

    Wig

This character is very popular, so there’re plenty of wigs concerning him ! I search mainly wigs on ebay, and sometimes, I find some wigs which are cheaper !   The wig has to be good quality and stylized like Natsu’s hair. This is the wig which you don’t have to buy !!!!

It’s shining, having no volume and being bad quality. The type of the wig I prefer is this one :

As you can see, it’s not shining, not spiking a lot. It looks very natural. This is only little details but they make the difference !   When you buy a wig on the Internet, generally the seller give you a hair net. It’s very useful : thanks to it, nobody can see your real hair through your wig. That’s why you have to have one !

    Scarf

If you have a scarf which looks like the real, you are lucky. Otherwise, you have to work =P First, you have to find a white scarf which has the same shape. Then, there are a lot of ways to make the black stripes :

    • you can sew with black sewing thread with your sewing machine
    • you can color it with a felt-tip
    • you can knit a scarf

    Jacket

Now, you have to sew, you can’t do in a different way =P. If you have a sewing machine, it’s perfect ! Or else, it’ll be harder and longer… But nothing is impossible ;)   If your grandmother sews or if you have friends who can help you, don’t hesitate to ask them some advices ! If you’re like me, so alone, I’ll give you some tricks.   Draw your inspiration from a pattern. Do you know what it is ? It’s a diagram which depicts the different parts of the clothe in order to put them together.   This is a pattern I’ve just found. It’s very simple and match the jacket :

You can see two parts : the right for the front, the left for the back. So to realise the jacket, you have to take a black coton where you’ll cut four parts (two for the front, two for the back)   Then, concerning the orange borders, I advise you to sew bias tape. You can buy bias tape in a shop, or you can do them by yourself if you want the same width as Natsu !

    Belt

If you’re not perfectionist, you can search a similar belt in shops. On the contrary, you want the perfection, you can make the buckle in modeling clay. Then, you just have to add a strip.

    Trousers

If you have never sewed, I advise you to buy a trousers and customize it. I’ve never sewed a trousers because I think it’s so hard for me. So, find a similar trousers and add black straps.

    Loincloth

Easy to make ! Take the same coton that you’ve used to make the jacket and adjust it considering your size. Use the same bias too.

    Shoes

I think you can find them on ebay or in shops ;)

    Bracelet

    Ebay =P

    Make-up

I know Natsu has no make-up =P. But considering I’m trying to write a complete tutorial, I want to explain this step for the girls. You shouldn’t hesitate to insist on the make-up, it’s a real pleasure on the photos even if in real life, it could be strange ! Look at youtube videos, it can help you a lot ! This is some clues for you :

    • Before applying your make up, clean your skin with appropriate products
    • Apply your foundation. I have Vichy Dermablend. I just love it !!
    • Don’t hesitate to use blush in order to have a slimming effect on your face.
    • For your eyes and your lips, do as you want :)

    Character’s personnality

In “Cosplay”, there is “play”. That is to say the ability to play the character. It’s not enough to look like your character physically, you have to play him/her. It’s important to know his/her environment where the character lives. If you make Paine Cosplay from Final Fantasy X-2 and you have a kawaii attitude, it won’t work because she’s cold xD. Don’t hesitate to watch again some extracts of the manga/video game.

    Conclusion

I hope this tutorial will motivate a lot of people who hesitated in beginning Cosplay. And don’t forget : LET’S HAVE FUN ! =D

  • [Tutorial] Serah’s bow in Final Fantasy XIII-2

  • May 15, 2012

  • Introduction

In this tutorial, I’ll explain you how I’ve made Serah’s bow. Of course, it’s not the best way of making :-) ! I’m inexperienced concerning woodworking and I don’t have all of the equipments necessary to succeed in. The advantage is that it’s very cheap ! You just should take your time to do it perfectly. You will understand I’ve followed Kamui’s example;-)

    Materials you need

    • wood
    • pencil, rubber, sheet or printer
    • saw which cuts the wood
    • polyurethane
    • cutter
    • modeling clay
    • craft foam
    • scalpel
    • filler to smooth
    • paper
    • paintbrush
    • paint
    • thin cord

    Sketch achievement

First you have to reproduce the bow on a paper in lifesize. You have two solutions :

    • drawing it on a paper with a pencil and a rubber
    • print the bow in lifesize

Personally, I’ve reproduced it drawing it.

First, I’ve printed this picture  on a A4 paper format to have a model :

To reproduce the bow in lifesize, you have tu use the following method . Look at the diagram :

You have to define the length of the bow in lifesize (X on the drawing). Let’s imagine you want to define it at 1m20 whereas you have measured X=26,6cm and Y=2,4cm. Than, let’s see the method :

To know the length of the part you have to reproduce, you have to calculate (2,4 x 120) ÷ 26,6. The result is 10,82cm (I hope you understand XD). That’s a way to reproduce the weapon.

I confess this method is a bit tedious but it’s like that I’ve reproduced my weapon because I didn’t have a printer next to me. You can print directly the sketch in lifesize with a printer but I won’t explain how to make it :-P .

I advise you to make these parts of the weapon separately :

Making them aside, you can depict the “hole” that we can see on the second picture.

Cut a rectangle for the handle. It will permit to solidify it.

Now, you have to cut the pattern and let’s go for the next step !

    Wood achievement

Now, you have a finished pattern. You have to depict it again on your wood. Don’t forget about drawing the parts that I’ve just told you in the previous paragraph !

Then, cut the bow with a saw, and sand it !

    Making the relief

Now, take your polyuréthane. You have to put foam on the parts which are in relief :

At the same time, put the 8 parts you’ve cut separetely together with foam ! The foam takes 4 hours to dry, but I always wait an half-day. Then, carve and carve !

For the handle, I’ve made two pile of foam and, when it was dry, I’ve put the rectangle and I’ve put again foam.

To make the little reliefs, you can work with modeling clay which dries in 24 hours and you can glue craft foam.

    Polishing

When you like the global shape of your weapon , you have to polish it ! The foam is convenient but there are a lot of irregularities and it’s not very beautiful :/ . So take a finishing plaster to polish, a scalpel and roll it out !

When the finishing plaster’s coating is dried, sand it as you have done before with the wood. The surface will be smooth and the irregularities will be left.

Then you have to cover your weapon with chewed paper (only on the parts which are worked with finishing plaster’s coating).

    Painting

I’ve begun to paint with a purple spray. Then, I’ve painted its black parts.

After, you have to apply metal paint.

To make pink’s gradation, I’ve begun to paint in pink the parts on the top, and I’ve rolled it out with a drenched brush in water. After, you have to paint contours with metal paint.

    Details !

For the screws, I’ve made them with modeling clay and I’ve glued them on the bow. Then I’ve taken  white thin cords that I’ve glued on the weapon with hot glue. I’ve painted them in metal color.

    Conclusion

You have to be unhurried if you want to make this weapon ! You should spend a lot of time on the chewed paper step !
